ACT Beyond Pain Program, Lebanon
ACT Beyond Pain Program uses modern pain science and evidence-based Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to guide students in an understanding of pain, and in developing tools with which to change their respective pain experiences. The class is for anyone with persistent pain, be it physical, emotional or both (pain is pain). Guided by modern pain science, students learn how cognition and emotion can increase or decrease the intensity of internal sensations. Additionally, students are educated as to how trauma can rewire the brain to interpret threat where none may exist. As pain frequently leads to isolation and a pattern of avoidance, students explore personal values as a compass for re-engaging in physical movement, social and leisure activities. Mindfulness is a critical component to the curriculum, as only awareness allows us to be cognizant of what is occurring in the moment, so that we can make a conscious choice to continue in old patterns, or retrain our brain to develop novel and helpful habits. Students learn tools with which to decrease the impact of painful thoughts and memories, as well as tools to reduce the intensity of unpleasant emotions. Armed with education, skills, new friendships and empowerment, students then begin to take committed action steps in alignment with values, moving forward in chosen, meaningful life directions.
